Each Way Betting Explained
An each way bet is essentially
two separate bets on the same selection:
1.
Win bet - Your selection must finish first
2.
Place bet - Your selection must finish in a specified placing (usually 1st, 2nd, or 3rd)
How It Works
- You stake is split equally between both parts
- If you bet £10 each way, that's £20 total (£10 win + £10 place)
- The place portion pays at reduced odds (typically 1/4 or 1/5 of win odds)
Example
£10 each way on a horse at 10/1 odds (1/4 place terms):
- If it wins: Win bet pays £110 + place bet pays £35 = £145 total return
- If it places 2nd/3rd: Only place bet pays £35 return
- If it finishes 4th or lower: Both bets lose
Common Each Way Terms
- Horse racing: Usually 1/4 odds for 1st, 2nd, 3rd places
- Golf: Often 1/5 odds for top 5-8 finishers
- Football tournaments: 1/3 odds to reach final
